Rapunzel

Urban lots are always a challenge, and fitting in is often as important as standing out. With space at a premium and a postage stamp sized lot to work from; this design goes up! Mixing modern needs such as a garage and open kitchen with great indoor / outdoor living, this project stretches what’s possible. A third level loft and rooftop deck help add space and private outdoor living with a view.

Oakhouse

A narrow lot, flood zones, and great views helped shape this design for an elevated home. Vernacular design elements such as large porches and wood shutters are mixed with low maintenance metal siding and roof top decks to blend a house that fits into the lowcountry vernacular; while firmly standing up for its individuality.

Adelaide

A classic front porch, board and batten siding, and an inviting front door make this design a low country classic. Large windows and doors bring down the scale of this nearly 3500 sf house, with 4 bedrooms and 3.5 baths. The neighborhood called for detached garages and hides an efficiency sized apartment above.

RE:New Corner

Based on the urban precedent of the neighborhood corner store; this reinterpretation of the mixed – use corner found so often in residential neighborhoods in Charleston contains street level commercial space fronting the corner, and 3 residential units above. It’s exaggerated overhang gives much needed land and consideration to the public realm, while a number of roof top decks lend private outdoor space to the residential units. The articulated façade provides privacy as well as solar protection from the strong southern sun.

Core House

Based on the one room wide vernacular architecture of Charleston, this contemporary adaptation of the historic single house taps into the environmental and social precedents of its neighbors. It’s deep porches on the southern façade shad it from powerful summer sun and give the homeowners generous outdoor space not always found in an urban dwelling. Its vertical screening devices pivot, slide, and lock into place to not only provide shade and security, but also protection form and tropical weather that may strike Charleston in the future. Its out building uses similar architectural language while containing a studio/garage and living space
