MarshEdge

Challenging sites inspire creativity and unique solutions. On a small lot perched on the edge of marsh land, this home reaches out to nature. Its cantilever hovers to the edge of the site, maximizing ground space under while bringing the living space to a perch just above nature. The homes expansive glass wall helps dissolve the boundary between the indoors and exterior. A roof top deck allows for exterior living, maximized views, and a habitable space above the bug zone. It hovers in balance with its connection to nature and the necessities of modern living.

Compound Restoration

The site was abandoned and in disrepair, and on it a classic Charleston Freeman Cottage, along with a few shacks and what might have originally been a garage sat scattered on this long narrow site.

The new owners saw the potential to bring this small home back to life while maintaining the existing street presences and expanding the cottage to better fit a modern life.

We were able to arrange additions in a way that created a village massing where one larger home felt like many and saved a shared courtyard with the small commercial structure. The space is inmate and urban, while allowing for a 4 Bedroom home to snuggle into the streetscape. The ramshackle garage space was brought back to life as micro-commercial space, activating the sidewalk.

Tension House

Custom Estate Home

This estate home perches itself on an oceanfront site surrounded by lush Palms and sub-tropical brush. Inspired by artifacts commonly located at the beach like shells and feathers, deconstructed forms with large glazing walls and windows create transparency through the structure upon arrival with views to the surrounding landscape and ocean. The elevated home allows for a grand entrance and transitions between interior and exterior spaces. Screen walls create semitransparent privacy that allow soft light for the living spaces and disguise the carport beneath. A central tower anchors the primary forms to the site and circulates residents through the primary and secondary living spaces. Swooping tensile-structure canopies provide shade for the rooftop gardens – a light, organic form that contrasts the hard primary forms of the home.

Yacht House

Custom Estate Home

This estate home perches itself on an ocean bluff surrounded by lush Oaks and sub-tropical brush. Greeted by a carriage house at the gate, the elevated home allows for a grand entrance and a mix of traditional shingle shake siding and brick in a modern color pallet. The curved form is delicately situated on top of glass – emphasized by subtle textures of shake siding, it appears as a floating object in the landscape. Tall frameless, butt-glazed walls allow the main living space to view forward while the rear of the space has oversized pocket glass walls that slide open onto a screened area and pool deck. A large kitchen with catering space is connected by a formal dining area to the great room for endless entertaining space. A secluded main floor master suite captures views toward the water, while a private office perches over the drive to welcome guests. A mix of dark shake shingles, light brick, and copper roofs mix up the traditional material pallet into a modern beach retreat.

Suburban Duplicity

Custom Duplex Homes

Shifting the suburban development model towards density and new urbanism are the core concepts in Suburban Duplicity – transitional multi-family residential homes and rentals. Plans for the homes are designed to maximize efficiency and density of the site – utilizing vaulted forms and high ceilings for the primary living spaces allows for better quality of light and comfort within the spaces. Simple forms, materials, and colors give the homes a modern minimal palette with thoughtful design qualities. A-symmetrical shifts between the plans and elevations separate the homes as individual residences while still being part of one cohesive structure. One unit features a large, double-height screen porch that floats delicately above the landscape at the entrance, while the second unit features a spacious outdoor deck and patio in the rear. A central courtyard highlights the entrance to both homes and features lush landscaping with a pedestrian path weaving residents between street and home. Screen walls break up the homes facade with subtle textures and disguise the garage locations. Historic elements like rafter tails and principles of proportion combine with contemporary forms and details to create a bridge between traditional and modern.

Mixon Apts

Adaptive reUse Apartments

Building on historical foundations, the Mixon Apts take residence amongst an ever-changing urban fabric in North Charleston, SC. Often rundown, dilapidated, and even abandoned – these buildings provide an opportunity for new vision through the old and current conditions. Tight zoning requirements and site constraints outlined a challenge for bringing new life to this project through its limitations. An existing masonry structure – in a state of ruin and consisting of bare minimum walls – provides the core shell of this modern multi-family residential building. Layers of horizontal cementitious siding are revealed through the core shell emphasizing the transition of material and time. Each building is divided into resident apartment units that share common plans with openings to the exterior for private patios, balconies, and light. Landscaping and wall vegetation provide texture and privacy that connects the urban community back to the natural environment. Bold colors and graphics mark the building’s profile with a modern palette that speaks to the surrounding history and context.
